Twilight glittered on the horizon--the rare meeting of light and dark in a battle to decide who would rule the skies for the night. By the end of the day, the sun was weary and the darkness would defeat it with ease, but the sun would always rise again. Such was its fate, as the sun could not exist among the darkness that gave life to its brethren stars.
We may never know who or what condemned the sun to stand alone in a battle against those it loved. Some even say the sun no longer remembers the stars.
A tragic tale passed down within a select number of tribes and villages. One of many tales I heard throughout my many adventures that resonated with me.
The light would always be condemned to fight the darkness, 'twas true, but the why of it is now long forgotten history--remembered only in the minds of those who witnessed it. Such individuals were long gone now, and the only thing left of the truth is the haze in the back of our minds that no one can quite seem to grasp.
A shared longing for a hazy paradise we'd long given up looking for--a whisper that something wasn't right, but no one knew quite what that was. We'd all unanimously decided to ignore the whispers and the fog settled in the back of our minds. As the years went by and new generations were born, the feeling lessened. Each newly born child felt the effects less than the previous--some not at all.
My personal theory was that it never really went away, but we just forgot how to listen to it.
I knew I wasn't strong enough to fight the darkness. I knew I'd fail. I knew but… I would face them or…or…or what? Why did I have to face them? Why did we have to fight? Why did it feel so…
"The darkness seeks to destroy all creation. Only when they themselves are destroyed may we live in peace."
That's right…but it doesn't make any sense. Why…? What do they gain from destroying everything?
"You ask many questions little one" she chuckled "but their motive matters not. The prevention of such a tragedy befalling the star is paramount."
Why…
"Failure is not an option, for we shan't live to see it."
No, that's… A stabbing pain overcame my mind and I screamed, gripping my head and falling unsteadily into the wall with a thump.
"Something…something isn't…" I struggled out before another wave of excruciating pain forced a second scream out of me. The necklace around my neck clattered to the floor with my thrashing.
